A Guide to Effective Care in Pregnancy and Childbirth
by Murray Enkin(Editor) , Marc J.N.C. Keirse , James Neilson , Murra Enkin
This book summarizes all of the research contained in the Cochrane
Database of pregnancy and childbirth studies. It is a valuable tool
for those who don't have the time to look through the whole database!
These studies actually support the case for lower intervention style
childbirth in most cases, and help a professional to decide when the
interventions might be necessary. I use it to help my students when
they have a specific topic of interest, and I carry it to the hospital
when I do labor support - in case I need to support my opinion with
the facts!

Obstetric Myths Versus Research Realities : A Guide to the Medical Literature
by Henci Goer
This book is a real time saver as it summarizes the available research on
a number of topics vital to childbirth. Ms. Goer has meticulously
examined the literature with an eye to well-done research, and uses this
summary to expose the myths held by many obstetric practitioners. One
example of this is the myth that the drugs used in an epidural do not
reach the baby. If you are doing labor support, take this book to the
hospital with you!

Metabolic Toxemia of Late Pregnancy : A Disease of Malnutrition
by Thomas H. Brewer, MD
Dr. Tom Brewer is a pioneer in the field of pregnancy nutrition,
and also a bit of a radical (in the eyes of the medical community).
His "radical" ideas about nutrition and toxemia were tested in
his obstetrics practice in Richmond, CA, USA and seemed to be very
effective. He had not one case of convulsive toxemia in all of his
patients! This diet is the base for the Bradley Method® diet
in pregnancy recommendations.

Breastfeeding and Human Lactation
Jan Riordan RN, Kathleen G. Auerbach , PhD
This is one of the definitive books on breastfeeding for the
professional. Many lactation consultants consider it their bible.
It may be more information than the typical doula or childbirth
educator needs as it contains lots about things that can go wrong
in the breast but are fairly uncommon. It is a valuable resource
for a lactation counselor, and may be useful for midwives as well.

The Childbirth Kit : Ideas and Images to Help You Through Labor
by Marie Fellenstein Hale and Liz Chalmers
This is a combination of a book with helpful tips for pregnancy and
childbirth and a set of cards designed to help coach a woman through
the various stages of labor. The cards have beautiful images that
are specific to different points in labor, and on the back of each
care there is a visualization for the coach to read, or helpful tips
for that part of the labor. The design makes it easy for the woman
to look at the picture while the coach reads the back to her. There
were very few points in the book that I didn't agree with, and I feel
that this may be a very useful tool for couples as they go through
labor, and that some professional labor assistants might also find it
to be helpful. I plan to try it out at the next labor I attend, as
well as loan it to some couples to see what works and what doesn't.
Then I can write more!

"Guide to Baby Products (5th Ed)"
by Sandy Jones (Publisher: Consumer Reports Books)
This is the 1996 version of the Consumer Reports Guide To Baby Products.
It tells you how the various car seats, high chairs, strollers, toys, and
other baby products from different manufacturers stood up to their
rigorous testing. I highly recommend checking this book before you buy
things for your baby - some products on the market could be downright
dangerous - as the ever popular walker can attest! Walkers cause a huge
number of injuries every year, so don't be one of the parents who has to
deal with an injured child!

sense - here is what we found that worked (attachment parenting), but
you need to take what works for you and leave the rest! The important
thing here is that the medical advice is recent and accurate.
